There is something really special about a Portland boudoir maternity session. It is one of those experiences that can feel a little intimidating at first – and then end up being one of the most empowering things you have ever done for yourself.
Whether you are dreaming of something soft, glowing, and romantic, or you want to walk in and own the room with full boss-mama energy, this kind of session is a celebration of you exactly as you are right now.

Two Directions for a Portland Boudoir Maternity Session, Both Absolutely Beautiful
Here is what I have noticed after photographing many expectant mamas: boudoir maternity sessions tend to go one of two ways.
Soft, romantic, and feminine. Think flowing fabrics, warm light, delicate textures, and a mood that feels like a love letter to this season of your life.
Editorial and bold – “boss mama” energy. Think strong lines, confident posing, a look that says you are powerful and you know it. Because you are.
Neither direction is better than the other. They are just different expressions of who you are. And honestly? Some mamas want a little of both in the same session.
What to Wear (And Why the Studio Closet is Your Friend)
As your Portland boudoir maternity photographer, I want to make things really easy for you.
I have clothing at the studio specifically to support both of these looks. My client closet is stocked with pieces that photograph beautifully, fit a range of bump sizes, and bring out the best in both styles. Using it is one of the smartest ways to add variety to your session without the stress of sourcing everything yourself.
That said, here is my best advice on what to wear for your boudoir maternity session:
- Use the client closet to add looks you might not have thought of or owned yet.
- Bring one to two outfits from home that you already know you love and feel like you in. This is important. When you wear something that already makes you feel confident, it shows.
- Neutral tones almost always photograph the most timelessly. Cream, black, white, taupe, chocolate brown, soft gray, and muted earth tones keep the focus on you and your shape.
- Think texture over busy patterns. Lace, ribbed knits, silk, sheer fabrics, oversized button-downs, chunky sweaters, or soft draping fabrics add depth without distracting.
- Bodysuits are incredibly flattering for maternity boudoir because they define the bump while still feeling elegant and supportive.
- Don’t underestimate simple. A black bra and underwear set, an oversized cardigan, or an unbuttoned shirt can photograph more beautifully than something overly complicated.
- Pay attention to fit more than size. Pregnancy sizing is weird. Choose pieces that gently hug your shape without digging into skin too tightly.
- Avoid anything you constantly need to adjust or pull up. If you’re uncomfortable during the session, it tends to show in the photos.
- Long robes, sheer wraps, open cardigans, and flowy fabrics create beautiful movement and softness around the body.
- Bare skin photographs beautifully during pregnancy. Off-the-shoulder pieces, open backs, thigh slits, and partially unbuttoned clothing can feel sensual while still staying tasteful.
- If lingerie is not your thing, that is completely okay. Boudoir maternity does not have to mean tiny lace outfits. A fitted tank, jeans unbuttoned under the bump, a soft sweater, or a draped fabric can feel just as intimate.
- Coordinate undergarments carefully. Nude seamless underwear and bras are helpful under lighter fabrics.
- Remove Apple watches, hair ties on wrists, and anything that unintentionally pulls attention away from the image.
- Consider professional hair and makeup if it helps you feel polished and relaxed. Slightly more makeup than everyday tends to photograph best on camera.
- Moisturize skin and lips beforehand, and avoid tight clothing immediately before the session to minimize deep skin marks.
- Bring more than you think you need. We can always narrow down options together once you arrive.
- Most importantly: wear pieces that still feel like you. The goal is not to look like someone else. It is to celebrate this version of yourself exactly as you are right now.
The Art of Lighting Your Portland Boudoir Maternity Session
How do I achieve these two different styles in the same studio space? Lighting! The way I shape and control light during your session plays a huge role in creating the final mood of your images.
For the softer, romantic images, I use large, diffused studio lighting designed to mimic beautiful window light. The result is creamy skin tones, gentle shadows, and that soft, feminine glow that feels timeless and emotional.
For the more editorial, bold “boss mama” images, I completely shift the lighting. I bring in stronger contrast, deeper shadows, and more directional light to create sculpting, definition, and a mood that feels powerful and elevated – almost like something you would see in a magazine spread.
Because studio lighting is fully controlled, we are not dependent on the weather, time of day, or harsh natural light conditions. It allows me to intentionally create exactly the feeling we are going for in each set of images, whether that is soft and vulnerable or confident and striking.
And honestly? One of my favorite things is blending both looks into the same session so you walk away with a gallery that feels layered, artistic, and completely reflective of who you are in this season.
Why This Kind of Session Matters
Pregnancy is one of the most remarkable and fleeting seasons of your life. And I know it does not always feel that way – especially on the days when you barely recognize yourself in the mirror.
That is exactly why I think boudoir maternity work is so powerful. It asks you to slow down, step into a calm and supportive space, and see yourself the way the people who love you most already do.
Beautiful. Strong. Worth celebrating.
These are not just pretty pictures. They are a record of who you were at one of the most significant moments of your life. And years from now, you will be so glad you have them.
