7 Tips for Maternity Photos with Partner and Siblings

If you’re reading this with a baby kicking gently in your belly, a curious toddler tugging at your leg, and a camera-shy partner somewhere in the background, I see you. You might be wondering, “Should I plan maternity photos with partner and siblings, or just keep it focused on me and my bump?”

Here’s the truth: Most partners and siblings aren’t exactly counting down the days to smile for the camera. And honestly? That’s totally okay.

As a maternity and newborn photographer serving families in Salem and Portland, Oregon, I’ve been through this dance more times than I can count. The good news is that a little creativity, patience, and rhythm (yes, sometimes we’re drumming on bellies!) go a long way. These sessions aren’t about staged perfection. They’re about connection. And the relaxed, real moments are often the ones you’ll love most.

Let’s talk about how we gently, authentically bring your people into the story when you are having a baby. Maternity photos with a partner and sibling are possible! Let’s get into it.

The Real-Life Chaos That Shapes the Most Beautiful Shots

Here’s something I wish every expectant mom heard: You don’t have to perform in your photos. Neither does your toddler. Or your partner.

Let’s release the pressure before we even begin.

Sometimes we’re juggling frequent snack breaks, diaper blowouts, or a toddler who would rather play peekaboo behind the curtain than smile at the lens. And still, we make magic. Why? Because the session isn’t about forcing anyone into a pose they’re not feeling. It’s about creating a low-stress, emotionally honest atmosphere where you (and your people) can simply exist and connect.

That’s what I love most.

7 Tips for Maternity Photos with Partner and Siblings

Here are a few easy and friendly ways we keep things real and relaxed while incorporating your partner and older kiddos.

1. Rotate Them In and Out

Short attention spans? No problem. Long sessions? No thanks.

  • I like to bring partners and siblings in for just a few photos at a time.
  • Then they get to relax, wander, or snack off to the side while we focus on you.
  • This rhythm keeps the energy positive and avoids burnout.

It’s like giving everyone their own moment to shine without forcing full-on participation for a straight hour. It also keeps the spotlight on you and that beautiful baby bump.

2. Let Them Drum on Your Belly

Toddlers don’t always know exactly how to interact with a growing belly… but drums? Drums they understand.

  • One of my go-to tricks: I ask, “Can you pretend Mommy’s belly is a drum? Pat-pat-pat!”
  • Then I ask them to “Give Mommy a big hug!”
  • Right when their face is squished sweetly against your bump, I ask them to look at me.

That’s the moment. It’s tender, silly, and completely organic.

3. Bribes Aren’t Off the Table

I’m not above a little positive reinforcement around here.

  • Whether it’s goldfish crackers or the promise of ice cream afterward, little rewards work wonders.
  • The key is keeping it light and fun, not pressure-filled.

Some of the best sibling expressions? You guessed it… mid-bribe. Give them something to look forward to, and everyone wins. I’ve written more about why parents should not feel guilty about bribing kids at photo shoots here.

4. Keep Expectations Low and the Energy Warm

You’re not hiring me for picture-perfect behavior.

You’re hiring me because you want heirloom-worthy connection photos that reflect your family’s personalities. I’ll gently guide when needed, but never push.

Trust me, a slightly crooked toddler grin or a spontaneous laugh between you and your partner has way more heart than something overly posed. Energy matters more than symmetry.

5. Give Them a Job

Kids (and even some partners 😉) love feeling important.

Ask them to hold the ultrasound photo, place their hands on your bump “to keep it safe,” or help fluff your dress. And partners are great fan holders! lol

Giving them a role makes them feel involved and proud, plus, it gives us sweet, candid photo opportunities.

6. Embrace Movement

Instead of keeping everyone perfectly still, I’ll have you give your toddler a few fake drops, dancing in place, or spinning your toddler around between shots.

Movement keeps kids engaged, helps partners relax, and creates natural expressions you can’t get from stiff posing.

7. Know that I’m Busy Capturing the In-Between Moments

Some of the best images happen when no one realizes the camera’s on them. Your partner brushing hair out of your face, your toddler being held on top of your belly, then resting their head for a moment on your shoulder, you and your partner laughing at nicknames you’ve already given the baby. I’m always ready for those little interactions that make your gallery feel authentic and full of life.

Why Maternity Photos with Partner and Siblings Matter

When you’re flipping through these photos years from now, what do you want to remember?

That your toddler held your belly with sticky fingers and a curious glance. That your partner wrapped you in a quiet hug while the baby kicked. That you felt beautiful and connected even in the midst of all the unpredictability.

These photos are a visual love letter to this fleeting season of waiting, loving, and growing. Not just the polished version – the honest one.

So, whether your people are thrilled to be photographed or a little hesitant, know this: it doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful. You’ll love the story we create when it reflects the truth of your emotion, not a Pinterest board.

I recently had a client write this to me after she viewed her maternity photos for the first time, “The gallery is amazing. I cried when I watched the slidedshow…”
