I know it can be a bit daunting to approach family photos. From finding a date that will work, picking a location, and figuring out what to wear. I want to make this process easy and that’s why I have a calendar of my availability to make booking straightforward, a location guide so you don’t need to come up with ideas yourself, and advice on what to wear.
I focus heavily on mamas during family sessions. I know you aren’t photographed nearly enough in the day-to-day, and your kids need as many photos with you in them as possible!
I'd love to hear from you, and learn more about your family.
The bulk of my photography work is newborns and babies at my studio, however, I also love seeing my families again to create updated family photos each year. I offer these relaxed and easy family sessions outdoors during the spring, summer, and fall months.
My approach to family photography is a combination of working to get those classic photos of everyone smiling at the camera, and also candid photos of your family interacting with each other. I think both are important!
Everything is in bloom! Yes, we have the rain to contend with, but in exchange, we have so much in bloom from the camas fields, rows of tulips, and dripping wisteria, spring is truly a magical time to take outdoor family photos.
Is there anything much better than photographing on a late summer evening? This might be my favorite time to photograph outdoors. Summer gives us golden sunset light that just can’t be beaten. And rescheduling due to rain? Pretty much a non-issue in summer!
Hands down the most popular time of year to photograph families. And for good reason. Crispy, orange, red, and yellow leaves make a stunning backdrop. The cozy fall wardrobe is a fan favorite too!
Family sessions are designed to feel relaxed, connected, and true to this season of your life.
Children are not expected to sit still or smile on command. I gently guide you into natural movement and interaction so your images feel genuine rather than posed.
The focus is on connection. The way your child fits into your arms. The in-between laughter. The small moments that often go unnoticed but mean everything later.
Sessions take place outdoors or in my studio. Wardrobe guidance is included to help everything feel cohesive and effortless without overthinking it.
The goal is not perfection.
It is remembering what this season actually felt like.
"Katie is simply the BEST photographer.
We’ve used her for over 6 years and couldn’t imagine having someone else take our family photos.
She is amazing to work with and is so very talented. Katie knows how to make you feel comfortable which is key to great portraits.
I highly recommend her to anyone whether you’re looking for newborn photos or family. I promise, you will not be disappointed."

We contacted Katie for my daughter's 2-year-old photos, along with some family pictures as well. The shoot was super chaotic because it was hot, and our almost 2-year-old was less than cooperative (understatement of the year). Katie was kind, patient, and very professional. My husband and I didn't think she would be able to capture many good photos due to the situation, but.......OMG the photos are so beautiful! I would HIGHLY recommend Arcadian Photography to anyone!

For this type of family photo session, I will come to you! Sometimes its easier to capture natural and authentic portraits when you are in your own environment at home. I’ll capture you doing the things you’d normally do everyday: reading books, playing with toys, lounging on your bed, and more.
Should you match? What styles? What about colors – should they be bright, bold, muted, or monochromatic? When you have a group of more than two people, it can be challenging to figure out what everyone should wear – especially when there are kids in the mix. To help make the process easier, here are my suggestions for how to put your family’s fall photo outfits together.
Family sessions can take place in my Salem studio, outdoors, or in your home if you’re local and prefer a more lifestyle look. Studio sessions offer a clean, timeless feel with soft, natural lighting. Outdoor sessions are great for playful, candid moments and beautiful Oregon scenery. In-home sessions are cozy and personal, especially for families with little kids.
I focus on clean, simple, timeless portraits, with a mix of classic-looking-at-the-camera shots and genuine, connected moments. I’ll be there to guide you through the whole session, but lots of the magic happens between poses: snuggles, laughter, and the way your kids naturally interact with you. My goal is to photograph your family exactly as you are in this season of life.
Coordinating, not matching, is the name of the game when it comes to styling family outfits. Aim for layers, a coordinating color scheme, and a mix of textures to give your photos depth and cohesion without feeling too matchy. Once you book, I’ll send over links to a few helpful blog posts I’ve written on this topic, along with Pinterest boards for inspiration. And truly, feel free to email me photos of any outfits you’re considering. I love helping families pull everything together, and I’m always happy to offer suggestions!
Most family sessions last about an hour. With young kids, everything is paced around them: we play, reset, let them warm up, and take breaks as needed. Sessions move quickly but never feel rushed.
Family sessions are designed for your immediate family - parents and children. If you'd like to include grandparents or additional family members, you're welcome to do so with an extended-family upgrade. Just let me know who will be joining, and I’ll share the details and make sure we plan a session that fits everyone comfortably.
Totally normal, and completely okay! After 17 years of photographing families, I promise I’ve seen every personality and every level of energy. I use playful prompts and gentle direction to help little ones feel comfortable, and we always follow their lead. Some of the best photos happen when kids are simply being themselves.
Oregon weather loves to keep things interesting! If the forecast looks rainy or overly windy, we’ll reschedule to the next available dry day or move the session into the studio. I’ll keep a close eye on the weather and let you know the day before.
Absolutely. Dogs are welcome as long as they’re friendly and well-behaved. Please bring treats, a leash, and a “handler” if possible, so we can rotate them in and out of photos smoothly.
You’ll receive your proofing gallery about 7–10 business days after your session. From there, you’ll choose your favorite images during a one-day online ordering appointment. Once finalized, your fully retouched photos will be delivered in a private gallery where you can download, share, and order prints or albums.
Just fill out the inquiry form on my website, and I’ll be in touch with availability and details. Once your session fee is submitted and the portrait agreement is signed, your date is officially reserved.
