It sounds simple. But when your due date falls in the summer months, the answer has a few more layers to it than you might expect.

If you’ve been Googling “when is the best time for maternity photos if my baby is due this summer” at 11 pm while scrolling through Instagram saves and trying to figure out logistics – I see you! This post is for you.

Let’s talk through the timing so you can stop second-guessing and feel ready to book.

The best time for maternity photos if you’re due this summer: the honest answer

The sweet spot is earlier than you think.

Every pregnancy is a little different, and so is the timing that works best for your session.

For most first-time moms, 32 to 36 weeks is the ideal window. By this point, your belly is beautifully full and round, you’re glowing in that unmistakable way, and you still have enough energy to feel comfortable and present during your session. updated

If this is your second (or third!) baby, your body often shows earlier, which means the 28 to 34 week range tends to work beautifully. We’ll talk through what feels right for you when you reach out. updated

For both, I gently suggest not waiting past 36 weeks. The final stretch of pregnancy can be wonderfully unpredictable, and I want to make sure we have your session safely on the calendar before those last few weeks arrive. updated

If your baby is due in July or August, that means you’re likely looking at booking your session somewhere between April and June — which might feel earlier than you expected.

Book your session date before you book anything else

If you’re planning a maternity session and your due date is June, July, or August, reach out before you hit 20 weeks if you can.

Not because I want to rush you. But because I want you to have the session you actually want, not a scramble to find a last-minute slot when you’re already exhausted.

Booking early means:

  • You get the date and time that works for you
  • There’s no stress about squeezing it in
  • You have time to think about what you want to wear and how you want to feel

Studio or outdoor? Here’s what to consider

Here’s something that might surprise you: if your baby is due in July or August, your maternity session will most likely happen in April, May, or June — well before the real Oregon heat arrives. Which means temperature is usually a non-issue.

Most of my maternity sessions take place in my studio, and I love the environment it creates. Because I work with studio lighting rather than natural light, the quality of your portraits never depends on the time of day, the weather, or the season. The light is always soft, controlled, and completely flattering, no matter when we schedule you.

That consistency is something I’m genuinely proud of. You’ll never get a rushed session because the light is fading, or a rescheduled shoot because it’s overcast. Your portraits will look exactly the way they’re supposed to, every time.

If you’re drawn to something outdoors: magnolias and cherry blossoms in March, tulips in April, or the camas field in May — I offer outdoor maternity sessions too. These are best done in the morning or an hour before sunset for the best natural light.

Not sure which is right for you? We’ll figure it out together when you reach out.

What if you’re feeling “not ready”?

I want to say this gently but clearly: the feeling of “I’m not sure I’ll look good” is one I hear from almost every single mom I work with.

And almost every single one of them looks at their finished portraits and can’t believe what they almost missed.

The vulnerability you’re feeling right now? It’s real. The changes in your body are real. And you deserve to have those changes reflected with warmth and beauty — not hidden, not apologized for.

That’s what I’m here for.

Why this timing conversation matters more than you’d expect

Maternity photos aren’t just about having something to post. They’re about pausing.

They’re about saying: this moment is worth remembering.

Because here’s what I know from personal experience, photographs become treasures in ways you can’t always predict. The images from seasons that feel ordinary, or even hard, can become the ones you return to most.

You deserve portraits that honor exactly where you are right now. Not a polished, performative version of motherhood, the real thing, with all its tenderness and beauty.

Getting the timing right is simply the first step in making sure that happens.
