A Shift Toward Modern Maternity Photos (and Why I’m Loving It)

I’ve seen a definite shift towards modern maternity photos in the last year or so—and I am here for it. This updated approach feels fresh, fashion-forward, and empowering, and I’m fully embracing it in the studio.

The biggest changes I’ve noticed come down to wardrobe choices. Today’s moms-to-be are leaning into sleek, minimal styles that highlight their pregnancy in a beautiful, understated way. Think bodycon dresses in solid neutrals like black or cream, tailored blazers, dress pants with a bralette, and even an oversized white button-down shirt paired with jeans. These looks feel elevated but effortless—modern maternity with a nod to editorial fashion.

It Starts with Style

One of the biggest shifts has been in wardrobe choices. Today’s moms-to-be are leaning into sleek, minimal styles that highlight their pregnancy in a beautiful, understated way.

Think bodycon dresses in solid neutrals like black or cream, tailored blazers, dress pants with a bralette, and an oversized white button-down shirt paired with jeans. These looks feel elevated but effortless—modern maternity with a nod to editorial fashion.

The vibe is modern, chic, and a little fashion-forward—with a focus on texture, contrast, and confidence. These aren’t just outfits, they’re looks—and they photograph beautifully. See my Pinterest board for more what to wear for modern maternity photos.

Lighting + Backdrops: Less Soft, More Bold

The modern trend isn’t just about clothes—it’s also about the overall mood and style of the shoot. We’re seeing more dramatic lighting and stronger contrast, which brings such a rich, editorial feel to the images.

Clean backdrops with bold pairings are key. For example, if you’re wearing a light-colored suit, pair it with a darker backdrop—like chocolate brown, deep gray, or black—to make the outfit and your shape pop. (I just added a roll of black seamless paper to the studio, and I’m obsessed with the depth it adds to the photos!)

On the flip side, a darker outfit looks absolutely stunning against a bright white or cream backdrop. It’s all about creating balance and visual interest while keeping the overall feel timeless and refined.

Q+A with this Expecting Mama

Why did you choose to document your first pregnancy?

I chose to document my first pregnancy with this photoshoot because, looking back, I didn’t take a lot of pictures myself that I really liked. I didn’t always like the way I looked and felt during pregnancy, and I wanted some pictures to capture the happy moments and to look back at my pregnancy in a positive way.

How did you decide what to wear?

I wanted to wear simple but elegant pieces. I did some research on social media and Pinterest for inspiration. I really liked the look of a long white dress. I also wanted to feel like something I would wear every day, so I chose a couple of outfits with pants.

How far along were you when you did the session and are you happy with the timing?

35 weeks, I’m really happy with the timing. I had a pretty good bump at that moment. I was happy I didn’t do it later because I began to get more swollen after that.

Would you recommend this type of session to every expecting momma?

Yes! I’m not used to doing photoshoots like that, but I had a really good time. And I get the best memory pictures.

Were you nervous?

A little bit, but not for long. Katie is incredible and put me at ease right away. I sent her some inspiration pictures I liked beforehand, and she guided me with positions and outfits. Couldn’t be more happy with the results.

How did you prepare for your session?

I created a Pinterest board for picture inspiration; I got some outfits ready. I did my hair, nails, and makeup. I wanted to look natural. Lots of body lotion! And that’s all!

Is this something you would do if you were expecting again? If so, what do you think would be different (if at all) about that session?

Yes. I would do it again if I was expecting again. Would probably include the 1st baby in the 2nd photoshoot.
