When’s the best time to photograph newborn twins?
Typically, I photograph newborns about 7-14 days after they are born. But, you say, “what if I’m expecting twins?” Right! Twins are a little different in how we schedule. Most often, they are born well before their due date and spend extra time in the hospital.
In the case of twins, I usually photograph 7-14 days after they come home from the hospital, not 7-14 days after birth. With the one caveat that they are feeding well. If they are still working on learning to eat, then we wait even a little longer.
A newborn session for twins could very well happen about 3-4 weeks after they are born. And that’s ok! This is normal.
Take, for example, the scheduling of newborn twins, McKenna and Quinn.
Mom, who was already booked and on my calendar, emailed me to say, “Our twins have arrived! They are five days old. We had some complications but will are discharging tomorrow and should be able to schedule newborn photos.”
In my reply back to her, I ask if they were born full-term or premie? Knowing this will help me decide when best to schedule them for their newborn session.
She lets me know that they were born premie at 37 weeks, and they are still having some trouble eating.
All very normal! And great info to have. So I say, “I’m going to suggest we schedule them at three weeks old to give them more time to get the hang of feeding. At three weeks, they will be 40 weeks, so we will still be well within the newborn range.”
As you can see, even though three weeks is older than I usually photograph a newborn, these turned out fabulous. They slept great, were very curly for newborn poses, and were two happy little babes!
