Do you feel guilty about bribing kids for photos?
You aren’t alone. I can’t tell you how many parents turn to me with a guilty shrug, saying something like, “I’m bribing her with ice cream after.”
To that I say: Great!
Do NOT feel guilty. I know you feel like you are “cheating” or giving in to bad behavior rather than teaching patience and cooperation. There’s a lot of pressure, especially in modern parenting, to do things the “right” way—fostering intrinsic motivation instead of relying on rewards.
But the reality is, kids are kids! Photoshoots are not their idea of fun, and a little incentive (whether it’s a treat, a special outing, or extra screen time) can make the experience smoother for everyone.
Most parents bribe their kids for all sorts of reasons—whether it’s for quiet time at the grocery store or getting through homework—so doing it for a short, important moment like a family photo session isn’t a big deal.
I think we should reframe it: it’s not a bribe; it’s positive reinforcement! It helps create a happy, cooperative environment, and that leads to better photos. A little treat after a well-done photo session? Totally worth it.

Bribing (or as we are now calling it “positive reinforcement” 😉) typically starts to work around age 2.5 to 3 years old, when kids begin to understand cause and effect better. This, then that.
Here’s a rough breakdown by age:
For a photo session, tangible, short-term rewards work best (stickers, fruit snacks, or smarties). If they have to wait too long, they’ll lose interest. Also, letting them feel in control (“Do you want a gummy bear now or after this next picture?”) can help, too!
I typically always have smarties with me and do not hesitate to dole them out one by one throughout the session. Sometimes, I need to do it for the first few photos then they get into it and forget about the Smarties.

Here are some tried-and-true “bribes” (ahem, positive reinforcements 😉) that work well for photo sessions, broken down by age and type:
Immediate Rewards (Great for Toddlers & Preschoolers, 2-4 years)
Delayed-but-Soon Rewards (Best for Ages 4-6)
Bigger Incentives (Great for Ages 6+)
Bonus Tips:

I have a few tricks for that, too! 😆
Here are some fun engagement tricks that help kids cooperate without bribing kids for photos. These work wonders for getting natural smiles and keeping kids entertained during a session.
1. Make It a Game 🎉
2. Give Them Control (Sort Of 😉)
3. Use Humor & Distraction 🤣
4. Get Them Moving 🏃
5. Secret Trick for Older Kids (6+)
6. When in Doubt… Be Goofy! 🎭
These tricks turn the session into a fun experience instead of a chore, making bribing kids for photos less necessary.
