If you’re looking for a location in Salem for your family photos with the most variety, Bush’s Pasture Park is hard to beat. Rather than photographing throughout the entire park, we’ll choose one area that best fits the style you’re envisioning. Each spot has its own personality, from colorful gardens to towering oak trees to open fields.

Rose Garden at Bush Park

Best for: Colorful flowers and a classic garden feel

The Rose Garden is at its most beautiful from late May through early July when the roses are in bloom. It’s a super quick walk from the Bush Barn parking lot. With vibrant roses, lush greenery, and a white gazebo, it’s a wonderful choice if you love a polished, romantic look.

Best season: Late spring & early summer
Best light: Golden hour
Walking: Easy
Good to know: Mostly full sun with nearby shade

Oak Grove at Bush Park

Best for: Timeless, natural family portraits

Towering oak trees create beautiful filtered light and a peaceful setting that photographs beautifully year-round. If you love a classic Pacific Northwest look, this is one of my favorite spots.

Minto-Brown Park

Best for: Tall golden grasses

If you’re dreaming of wide open spaces and a natural Oregon backdrop, Minto-Brown Island Park is the perfect spot. I photograph in a beautiful grassy field near the dog park, where the open landscape, tall grasses, and surrounding trees create a simple, timeless setting that lets your family be the focus. Deepwood Estate offers beautifully maintained gardens, winding paths, and the backdrop of a historic Victorian home. It’s a wonderful choice if you’re drawn to lush greenery, seasonal flowers, and a more intimate garden setting. It also has gorgeous fall color in the fall!

Best season: Spring through early fall
Best light: Golden hour
Walking: Easy. Most photo locations are connected by short, paved, or well-maintained paths.
Good to know: Deepwood is one of the smaller locations I photograph, making it easy to enjoy a variety of garden backdrops without much walking.

If you love a wide-open feel, Battle Creek is a beautiful choice. The tall grasses and expansive field create a soft, timeless backdrop that keeps the focus on your family, especially as the sun begins to set. If you live in South Salem, this is a very convenient spot for you!

Best light: Golden hour
Walking: Very easy. Street parking is just steps from the photo location.
Good to know: There are no restroom facilities at this location, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead before your session.

Willamette Mission State Park

Willamette Mission State Park is one of Salem’s hidden gems for family photos. From towering oak trees to peaceful river views and a seasonal field of daisies, the park offers several unique settings. We’ll choose one area within the park that best matches the look you’re envisioning.

Oak Grove

Best for: Towering oak trees, warm fall colors, and a timeless Pacific Northwest feel

The oak grove is my favorite area of the park for classic family portraits. The mature Oregon white oaks create beautiful filtered light, and in the fall, the changing leaves make this an easy portrait location.

Walking: Hard. Expect a longer walk from the parking lot.
Good to know: The walk is well worth it, but comfortable shoes are recommended.
